IRDR 2024 International Conference reached a declaration for science actions

IRDR 2024 International Conference was held on 22-23 Oct in Beijing, China. The Conference was hosted by IRDR International Programme Office, AIRCAS, CAST New Technology Centre, and Headquarters Cluster of International Science and Technology Organisations, with the support of International Science Council (ISC), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), China Association for Science and Technology (CAST).

The theme of the Conference is "Science for an inclusive, safe and sustainable world: ACTIONS OF IRDR Global Community". The three plenary sessions embraced science-policy interface, DRR education, and new solutions and applications. Each plenary session targeted to exchange the insights with presentations and panel discussion of experts from IRDR global partners, including officers in UN agencies, leading scientists, and decision makers in public sectors and private sectors. During the discussion, experts suggested and comments on the priority actions on "Support regional and national science and knowledge for policy and action""Address inequalities, injustice and marginalization"and "Harness technologies, data and knowledge for risk reduction".

The six parallel sessions were organised by IRDR ICoEs, Young Scientists and IRDR partners. UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia and International Research Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (IRCI) organised the session entitled “Enhancing the role of culture in disaster risk reduction”. IRDR ICoE CR and IRDR ICoE Coherence organized the session entitled “Exploring Science & Technology for Building Community Resilience and Sustainability Beyond Catastrophic Disasters in the Asia-Pacific Region” with the support of IRDR ICoE UKM SEADPRI. IRDR ICoE CCOUC and IRDR ICoE Fudan organized the session entitle “Climate Change, Air Quality, and Its Impact on Public Health” with the support of UNEP, WHO, GAW/WMO, and MAP-AQ. International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) and International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) organized the session entitled “Landslides-induced Tsunami and their Disaster Risk Reduction”. UNESCO IKCEST DRR, CODATA GOSC IPO and MEM BRIDRREM Research Center for Global Disaster Risks organized the session on “Data and Database for Disaster Risk Reduction”. It should be highlighted that a young scientist session was organized to provide opportunities for IRDR young scientists to present their research on “Applying Disaster Risk Assessment Results in Territorial Planning and Development Policies”.

The opening remarks of the conference were delivered by ISC CEO Dr. Salvatore Arico and UNSRSG on DRR Dr. Kamal Kishore. The closing remarks were delivered by the Head of UNDRR AP Office Dr. Marco Toscano-Rivalta, the director of ISC Global Science Policy Unit Dr. Anne-Sophie Stevance, and the deputy of the Department of International Affairs of AIRCAS Dr. Liu Jie. IRDR SC Chair Dr. Alik Ismail-Zadeh summarized the conference with the outcome document Declaration: Science for an Inclusive, Safe and Sustainable World.

The Declaration identified the priorities of the priority areas for international science collaboration proposed in the global risk research framework. A few IRDR Work Streams were also recommended in this document.
