IOC Visited IRDR IPO
04 March 2024

On February 29, 2024, Bernardo Aliaga, Head of the Tsunami Resilience Section at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/TRS), accompanied by Dakui Wang from the Division of Science and Technology at the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC), paid a visit to IRDR IPO. Experts from the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) and the Global Open Science Cloud (GOSC) were also present at the meeting.

The purpose of the visit was to explore the potential collaboration on science and technology research and actions toward disaster risk reduction and sustainable development, with a particular focus on ocean hazards and Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (MHEWS).

IRDR introduced its scientific mission and its work on MHEWS. IOC presented its efforts in tsunami warning and building resilient coastal communities. CBAS presented case studies related to Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14) and showcased data from the SDGSAT-1. GOSC highlighted its roles in facilitating the development of open science, open data and open e-infrastructures.

The exchanges of the meeting provided an excellent opportunity to identify synergies in disaster risk reduction and the development of MHEWS between IRDR and IOC, as well as with CBAS and GOSC.
